How do you remodel the heart of a historic house without losing its soul? For this 1890 residence in Saint Paul’s Summit Hill neighborhood, we did it by eliminating a 1980s kitchen and recreating a space with period sensibilities and the latest amenities. The house is a classic beauty designed by Cass Gilbert, the turn-of-the-twentieth-century architect notable for work such as the State Capitol in Saint Paul. The owners wanted to remodel their kitchen and breakfast room to complement the style of the house, and to expand the rear entry, mudroom, and closet.

We reconfigured the spaces so that the existing powder room and entry switched places. A 5-foot bump-out also added space to the rear entry, now at the back of the house, and the breakfast room. The old kitchen was gutted and gained custom-painted cabinetry, a farmhouse sink, integrated dishwasher and refrigerator, and new oak flooring that matches the rest of the first floor. At the same time, the exterior of the house got a facelift: When the remodel uncovered the original wood siding and shingles that had been hidden under steel siding for 60 years, the homeowners decided to replace and repaint both.

Our clients asked us to combine two condominium units in a new high-rise building into one large living space. They wanted to make the most of the spectacular city view through the continuous windows of both units. The subtly defined spaces of the open floor plan give the condo an understated elegance.

The open kitchen is a backdrop for the dining room, where floor-to-ceiling windows give way to the vista of the Mississippi River. The two-level island shields dishes and kitchen prep from diners, while a slightly lowered ceiling creates a soffit and proscenium opening that defines a space carved out of the wall. The simple lines of the cabinetry and concealed hardware support the rich textures of the glass, stone and wood materials.

The ebony oak accents of the serving and bar areas bookend the kitchen, and the natural materials of the open living area provide a modern, yet warm, sensibility.

This kitchen grew out of Sunday Supper—our client’s standing invitation to 15 friends to make dinner together each week. When she remodeled her 1905 Craftsman-style lakefront house, she wanted a kitchen that would accommodate large parties, multiple cooks, and ample seating for kibitzers—yet be intimate enough for her own day-to-day use.

We designed a kitchen appropriately scaled to her various needs, all of it beautifully encapsulated within period-style cabinetry, glass, and finishes. For entertaining, the octagonal serving table at one end, large island, and multiple prep spaces around the perimeter suit Sunday Supper gatherings as easily as catered affairs for 100.

The kitchen is situated to be equally accessible for a range of dining options, from the cozy breakfast room overlooking the garden that captures the morning light, to the romantic lakeside dining area with a view of the sunset over the lake, to the formal dining room.
