Overlooking Gold Medal Park and the Mississippi River, this downtown condo has an architectural flair to match the postcard vistas, with a design that is streamlined and unequivocally modern, yet warm and inviting. The open layout cleverly alters the unit’s original floor plan while working within the constraints of the existing plumbing and electrical infrastructure.
Our client desired a timeless riverfront live/work space in a new building, which was under construction. We looked to the building’s site for inspiration, considering the riverfront’s varied richness for precedent: shapes from the Stone Arch Bridge define the ceiling, natural and industrial materials are represented in the finishes, and metaphors for water flow throughout.
Designed to work on various scales, the intimate space is perfect for entertaining with multiple seating areas, a kitchen that is up to the task while still looking great from the living areas, and a home office that can be screened from view at the end of the day. Upon entry, a progression of art corner niches beckons the visitor into the residence with a series of points of discovery. A retractable fabric screen converts the entry sequence into a multi-functional laundry/studio area. We organized the spaces to allow light to filter deep within the condominium. The main living area is oriented to television viewing, while the lounge has arguably the best views and is specifically sited for intimate conversation.
