Long Lake Cabin
Long Lake, Wisconsin
Postwar “log cabin” cliches defined the original house; the 1990s addition was bland and suburban. With a minor change to the footprint, we reimagined the house and played with the cabin vocabulary to create a whimsical, modern space with sweeping lake views, a warm palette, and plenty of uncluttered storage for the family and their fortunate and frequent guests.

A new dormer opens the ceiling; light washes the dining room. The glass wall affords generous views previously interrupted by columns and the loft’s balustrade, which is now transparent.

A generous mudroom in the reception area and open shelves under the kitchen island accommodate the arrival of groceries and cooler-toting guests while keeping the space uncluttered.

Unique surfaces — cerused oak, and warm-tone Japanese tile with a linen effect texture — add a contemporary note to the cabin aesthetic.
