Saint Croix Modern

One client said “modern” and the other client said “cabin” and this design is the manifestation of those two intents. The well-loved mid-century cabin, originally just 1,000 square feet, was a cherished family retreat because of its location on the river. After a burst pipe ruined much of the building, we were asked to reconsider the cabin’s size, use, and aesthetic. It was to engage the surroundings without becoming the center of attention; it would celebrate memory but anticipate generations to come. We kept such characteristics as the “prow” emphasized by large windows. Working within Scenic River Byway national guidelines, we created an uncluttered shelter in the woods that remains an integral part of its natural context.
Interiors Architecture
Large expanses of glass capture and elevate scenic views. The soaring roof of the addition takes its geometry and cedar ceiling from the original structure.
Redwood salvaged from the old outdoor dining deck was re-milled to create the kitchen island, an homage to decades of memorable meals.
Before, the unimaginably small kitchen had no connection to the living area or view. With no space for a table inside the house, dining was on the porch or on your lap.
